B.Eng – ME (Mechanical Engineering)

Mechanical Engineering

The Mechanical Engineering curriculum at Asian University provides both technical and Professional Engineering skills.

Students are prepared for the workplace by bringing added value beyond just academic ability, with a capacity for continued growth throughout their careers and potential to become tomorrow’s leaders. Individual and group project work develops time, team and project management skills, as well as an opportunity to think around problems and find new solutions. Laboratory and workshop sessions provide practise in experimental techniques and design, data collection and analysis, comparison with analytical models and questioning of assumptions. High standards are also set in communication skills, including presentations, reports and meetings. Personal study skills are developed at all times, to enable life-long indepenedent learning.

The course covers the classic fundamental subjects, grouped into Solid Mechanics, Thermofluids, Mechatronics, Manufacturing and Design, in order to develop theoretical principles and methods of analysis. These elements are then combined in advanced courses and electives, testing both a deeper understanding and an ability to tackle a range of engineering problems including the modern and fast changing applications such as Robotics or Micro Electrical Mechanical Systems. Humanities, Business and non-technical electives provide breadth to the studies.

The teaching methodology focuses on early independence of thought and self-reliance, encourages a sense of curiosity, and promotes computing skills as tools to aid problem solving and communication. At all stages, the learning is linked to real life applications, and provides a view of the bigger picture by including the wider economic, social, political and environmental contexts of the modern world.

Students are supported in gaining work experience placements, with an input to their professional training and potential for an industrially sponsored final year project. This project draws from all their skills and engineering ability, and is the pinnacle of their degree.
